When Apple introduced the iPhone 5s they also introduced a way of getting into your phone that is faster and safer: Touch ID — a new fingerprint identity sensor.

If we look up what Apple says about Touch ID we find the following:

“Touch ID is a seamless way to use your fingerprint as a passcode. With just a touch of the Home button of the iPhone 5s, the Touch ID sensor quickly reads your fingerprint and automatically unlocks your phone. You can even use it to authorize purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store. Touch ID is capable of 360-degree readability, which means no matter what its orientation, your iPhone reads your fingerprint and knows who you are.”

Apple claims it uses a high resolution 500 ppi sensor capable of taking a extremely detailed “picture” of the sub epidermal layer of the skin to have a perfect representation of your fingerprint. Then they store this information on board a secure location of their newest and greatest 64 bit A7 chip.

My question here is: What if this really detailed fingerprint impression falls in the wrong hands? What if someone actually hacks the A7 chip? For those of you who have seen Christopher’s Nolan the Dark Knight Rises, Bruce Wayne actually looses all his fortune when Selina Kyle (a.k.a Catwoman) steals his fingerprints.

Continuing with my post on Google Now, do you think the benefits outweigh the risks? Or are we putting another bit of invaluable info on our phones?
