It’s curious, when you ask around someone how much he or she is willing to spend on a Smartphone, we tend to find out that people are increasing that amount regularly. That led me to think about all of this, is this trend reasonable?
Before beginning, I want to make it clear that I am neither an “Apple fanboy” nor do I worship the green Android figure. I have used both systems and I find that each has advantages and disadvantages of their own.
If we visit Apple’s webpage and look up the price of the newest iPhone 5s, we find the following caption:
Prices start at a whopping 700€ for 16Gb and reach 900€ for 64GB. Of course, to this price we would have to add the cost of a case to protect our jewel and always bear in mind that these are very perishable devices with a limited lifespan (technical obsolesce at it’s best).
We get the same trait with Samsung’s latest and greatest, the Galaxy Note 3. Allow me to illustrate.
750€ is the price tag for this one.
I’m not sure if you know about Google’s Nexus device (if you don’t and want to find out a bit more, please let me know and I will publish a post about them), these devices are high end phones subsidized by google. They represent Android as Google believes it should be. They have incredible specs but their best asset is possibly their price tag.
This device can be yours for 350€ 16Gb and 400€ 32Gb. This is (yes, you’ve done the math right) half the price of Apple’s beast. It has similar characteristics (even better than the iPhone in some), although as some would say “it isn’t an iPhone”. They are right, but, does an iPhone justify paying double?
Motorola’s latest bet is the Moto G. A medium range Smartphone that even though doesn’t have the same impressive specs as the Nexus, features a great experience and has a nice fluid processor (Quad core clocked at 1.2 Ghz) for just 179€. It is a super competitive phone that works like a charm and totally overhauls the medium range concept.
